We were engaged on Saturday, March 28th.
Saturday morning, John told me that he was taking me on a surprise date. He wouldn't tell me where we were going so I spent a while trying to figure out what I was going to wear. A dress? No. Heels? Definitely not. Will it be cold? Maybe? When we got to the car John had me put on a makeshift blindfold and we drove for about forty minutes. John stopped the car and told me to wait. Diligently, I waited and didn't peek even though John took near forever getting back to the car. [ed: it really wasn't all that long, though I am impressed she kept the blindfold on] John started driving again and I felt the car turn around and any ideas I had about where we were going were completely blown. John parked the car and helped me out and led me to the end of the asphalt and told me to take off the blindfold.
We were at Westward Beach! [ed: a special location for Kala and I, particularly where I was going to take her] John handed me a rose and we gathered the picnic basket, blanket and champagne from the car. We hiked over the rocks around to Pirate Cove. As we were coming down the rocks we saw a camera crew snapping pictures of a girl. The photographer asked John if we were a couple and if we'd like to take some pictures together. [ed: I swear, this was not staged...really!] We agreed to come back after dinner.
John spread out the blanket and scattered rose petals and poured the champagne and we sat down to our picnic dinner of fine cheeses and breads, a fresh balsamic salad, and salmon in a yummy cream sauce. Before we could get to the strawberry shortcake, we walked down to the shoreline where the photographer was set up. We took a bunch of pictures and got soaked up to the knees by a couple of big waves, but had a lot of fun.
As we were finishing our dessert, I noticed it was getting late and mentioned that we might want to get back over the rocks before it got dark. John looked at the sun and at the blanket and at me and mumbled something about how I should go walk down by the water for a bit before we left. He joined me shortly and we hugged while looking at the waves breaking on the sand. He told me how much I mean to him [ed: it's a lot] and got down on a knee and pulled out the little box and (after struggling to get it turned around the right way [ed: I did not struggle!] ) asked me to be his wife. I immediately said yes [ed: which was awesome] and he put the ring on my finger. We laughed and hugged [ed: and Kala stared at her new shiny] and climbed over the rocks and lived happily ever after. : )
